The course is an introduction to the German criminal justice system. This includes both substantive law and procedural issues. With regard to the former, the course will cover the following main topics: overview and basics of criminal law (e.g. nulla poena sine lege), homicides, attempt, self-defence, and state of emergency. A further main focus is on the interactions between substantive law and procedural law in Germany. With regard to the latter, the course will also focus on the principles of criminal proceedings, the course of criminal proceedings, the parties to the proceedings, and questions of evidence.
